It Is Essential To Realize Bullying And Stop It
A good number of us experienced bullying as children and survived it. But, how well did we survive it? How many people even as senior citizens still remember bullying incidents from their youth? The whole growing up and maturing cycle would be more enjoyable if there were no bullying to worry about. Too many schools try to ignore the problem and hope it will go away. It does not go away without intervention. Studies have proven that bullying is damaging to both the victim and the bully, and the damage carries on to later life.
What Is Bullying?
Some experts define bullying as aggressive, unwanted behavior between school children that creates a power imbalance. This unwanted behavior is repeated over time. Bullying can involve actions including threatening harm, spreading hurtful rumors, purposely excluding a child from a group, and even attacking a child verbally or physically. The main defining aspects of bullying are a child feeling picked on and uncomfortable, or a child acting aggressively toward other children in a way that makes him or her feel more power over them. There are a lot of variables to consider when diagnosing bullying and stopping or preventing it.
How does bullying Affect The Victim?
The victim of repeated bullying can lose sleep or have nightmares. They can even feel physically ill. The child may want to skip school for the safety of home or ask to not go outside for recess. The child may become depressed, suffer from damaged self esteem and anxiety, and even consider suicide. A child suffering at the hands of a bully may feel hopeless and helpless if no one makes the effort to help them.
Who Is At Risk For Bullying?
Bullying can happen to anyone, anywhere in large or small towns, and in rural areas. It can happen in exclusive schools or in ghetto schools. The groups of children most vulnerable are youth with disabilities, socially isolated or shy children, certain groups such as Muslim, gay, lesbian, or trans gender youth. Sometimes it takes as little as wearing glasses, being small for one's age, overweight, or being economically disadvantaged.
What Can Educators And Parents Do To Prevent Bullying?
School administrators, teachers, coaches, and parents should become educated about bullying. There are educational programs that address bullying such as http://www.stop bullying.gov/. These online courses can be very helpful. Preventing bullying must start at the beginning levels of education and there should be a bullying assembly every year of school. These anti-bullying school assemblies should describe bullying behaviors and give children safe ways to report bullying and get help. There should be a clear bullying prevention strategy with consequences for bullying clearly laid out. All school personnel should be trained to recognize bullying behavior and stop it on the spot. There should be special bullying programs in schools and then anti bullying programs for high schools. Anti bullying efforts should be ongoing with help for both victims and bullies.
